Toronto audiences can anticipate a dynamic new wave of theatre, driven by a passionate dedication to inclusivity, social relevance, and artistic excellence.
In 2026, BUG received two Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards:
Best Lead Performance in a Play for Nicholas Eddie
Best Scenic Design of a Play or Musical for Sophie Ann Rooney
The Toronto Theatre Critics’ Joshua Chong, Aisling Murphy, Ryan Borochovitz, Paula Citron, Liam Donovan, Karen Fricker, Stephanie Fung, Arpita Ghosal, Robyn Grant-Moran, James Karas, Ilana Lucas, Steven Ross, Drew Rowsome, Scott Sneddon, and Glenn Sumi citation praised Eddie’s “dynamic metamorphosis” as Peter, and described Rooney’s scenic design as transforming The King Black Box into a motel room so “rundown, stale, cramped, and convincingly lived-in” that audiences felt trapped inside the psychological world of the play.
In 2025, The King Black Box was honoured across major year-end Toronto theatre lists. The company was cited by Ilana Lucas in BroadwayWorld’s Top Toronto Theatre 2025, and further recognized when BUG was named one of Glenn Sumi’s Top 10 Toronto Theatre Productions of 2025, with Nicholas Eddie celebrated for his performance in BUG as one of Glenn Sumi’s Top 10 Toronto Theatre Artists of 2025.
The King Black Box was also named by Sesaya Arts in their list of Theatre Companies That Caught Our Attention, noting that “what production designer Sophie Ann Rooney immersively conjures in that tiny space is consistently remarkable and surprising every single time.”
